MENTAL HYGIENE OF SEX&MORAL PRINCIPLES
The simplest way to reorganize one's THINKING about this and other moral problems is never to lose sight of the fact that morality is not an end in itself and is worthy of respect only in so far as it acts as a means to greater happiness for oneself and other persons. Bearing this in mind, one requires all the traditional moral precepts, taboos, and sentiments to pass in review before the court of reason and justify themselves in terms of their consequences for human welfare. The mere defense that they always have been regarded as sacred or noble or pure or beautiful will not save them. Only those that really count in the creation of a healthier and happier life for the largest number of persons will be preserved.
A moral principle such as this gives one what may be called a liberal attitude toward sex. It sweeps away many of the old taboos and relieves the conscience of a heavy load of sin which ought never to have been put upon it. But this must not be taken to mean that the new morality gives the individual license to follow his sex impulses selfishly and ruthlessly wherever they may lead him. Modern morality is no less exacting than any previous code. The difference lies in the things demanded and the way in which they are demanded. No one is expected to accept any authority as an arbiter of right and wrong except his own intelligence guided by a reasonable concern for the welfare of others as well as of himself. But each one is held all the more responsible for his actions, inasmuch as no unreasonable demands are made on him.
