NONSURGICAL TREATMENTS FOR BPH: HYTRIN
Hytrin is another drug considered as an alternative to surgery for die correction of prostate problems. An article in Drug Topics states that Hytrin relaxes the smooth muscle around the bladder neck and prostate. This lessens the pressure on the urethra and helps the urine to flow more regularly. The drug takes about two weeks to work, and in clinical trials it has improved urine flow and relieved related symptoms of BPH in about 70 percent of users. So far, the drug has been shown to continue working for as long as 30 months. A small number of patients may not be able to tolerate it or may not show an improvement.
Hytrin does have side effects, including dizziness, drowsiness, blurry vision, nausea, and some swelling of the feet or hands. The drug lowers the blood pressure of patients with high blood pressure, but it has minimal impact on patients with normal blood pressure. Hytrin does not affect PSA values.
