SAW PALMETTO AND PROSTATE CANCER: CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT OF PROSTATE CANCER
Depending on the severity of the cancer, there are a few options available. Since many prostate cancers are small, are localized to the prostate gland, and grow very slowly, the wait-and-see approach is quite reasonable. A man is often more likely to die from another medical cause before the prostate cancer has a chance to grow, spread, and cause difficulties. If a patient and his doctor decide to wait and observe, routine prostate exams need to be performed. The blood test, PSA (prostate specific antigen), should be done regularly to see if the levels are increasing. PSA levels in the blood can indicate the severity of the cancer. If the levels rise, this means it is more likely that the cancer is growing.
Other options to cancer therapy include surgery, radiation therapy, freezing, and hormone therapy. For more detailed information, consult a urologist, or purchase a book on this topic.
Can Reducing DHT Levels Influence Prostate Cancer?
One of the concerns I often hear from users of medicines that influence DHT levels is whether this could somewhat influence, in a positive or negative way, the growth of prostate cancer. Although the full evidence is not yet in, at least one new study shows that cancerous cells in prostate tissue have many times higher levels of 5-alpha-reductase enzyme than noncancerous prostate cells.
Does this mean that taking Proscar or SP, or any medicine that blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT, or blocks the action of DHT, would reduce the risk of prostate cancer? This is a theoretical possibility, but until actual studies are done, it will not be known for certain.
